All the weird, all the violence, all the rebellious snark and darkness live in that one line. Obviously Harrow is devoted to her bones but I think spirit magic has a certain something going for it. WebGideon the Ninth is an adult science fantasy novel written by Tamsyn Muir, originally published on 10 September 2019. The set-up is genius: In some (possibly distant, possibly ancient, probably super-far-future) corner of the universe exist nine ancient houses with nine rulers and heirs adept in different forms of gooey, death-obsessed magic. And at the end of January, we met up with Muir on Zoom to talk them through. Reader support helps us keep our explainers free for all. She comes from such a privileged position. My experience of my gender identity prior to coming out as a trans woman presented a lot like Harrows experience of her entire identity. It is so explicitly terrible. Were there any alternate universe tropes that you considered using besides the coffeehouse AU and the role reversal that you eventually had to scrap? WebGideon has been abused and degraded by everyone in the Ninth house while simultaneously being told that she must be absolutely loyal to the house that despises Hell, to be honest, necromancy comes about because of the type of person Harrow needed to be. She is so reverent to him, and he is so clearly just some guy who somehow lucked his way into an obscene amount of power. The combinations really shouldnt work, but somehow they do. I also want to talk a little bit, before we get into more specifics, about all of the memes in the book. The trilogy as a whole is quite chaste. In the meantime, subscribe to our newsletter to make sure you dont miss anything. And so what the real takeaway at the end of the day was, the love of your friends and hugs is the greatest thing that a woman can have. Are those two things necessarily tied? And its been incredibly fun to just let loose. Dulcinea explains that the Emperor's call had "caught out" her House; lacking options, she had been using necromancy to move her cavalier's body about like a puppet's since before their arrival at Caanan House. Its just a page. We have at the heart of this mythology this relationship between the necromancer and the cavalier. I love stories where the protagonists realize that they have inadvertently stumbled into somebody elses much older, weirder story. And I think in every single one of those AU slots, there is a huge hint. Thats easy. Oh, this is so fraught, though. Its for you. Harrowhark can try to study the other Lyctors relationships to John, but she ultimately doesnt really care. In these surrounds, Gideon rewarded herself with a little plastic bag of porridge. It makes her become just vulnerable enough to be lovable. He should run again. You had always been afraid of anyone touching you, and had not known your longing flinch was so obvious to those who tried it. I am in the second camp, and so is Voxs critic at large Emily VanDerWerff. Except here, Harrow is the black-gowned, black-cloaked, black-hooded daughter of the Ninth House rulers, a powerful bone magician who sweats blood and can kill you with a flick of her wrist. And I think that actually helps mask some of the Gideon energy. Well, it means I have a lot of fun. But it also gives Harrow some cracks in her facade of bitchiness, a weak spot in her armor that she is working furiously to compensate for. Classically, bathtub scenes are a great equalizer. (I read it 14 or 15 times when I first came across it, and I sobbed.). They feel trapped in a narrative you understand intimately. And Gideon is a smart, foul-mouthed, queer swordfighter with a skull painted on her face, and the inside-her-brain POV that Muir has chosen here means we get full access to every panting, furious, childish, bloodthirsty and impure thought that crosses Gideon's mind which is fantastic, because I wanted to be her best friend by the end of the first page anyway, and everything that came after was just candy. Emily, how do you feel about Harrow the Ninth compared to Gideon? What about you, Emily? So for todays Vox Book Club discussion, I wanted to go through some of the foundational tropes in Gideon the Ninth and talk about how they work and why. They seem to be a little divisive. And it is hungry. Some can siphon the soul right out of your body. Entering the tomb, Nona remembers having done this before, proving after many increasingly clear hints that she is none other than Alecto: the body in the tomb. It appears to be the only surviving structure left on the planet everyone calls The First House (most likely a post-apocalyptic Earth, but we dont know that for sure yet), and it is in ruins. And one thing I did want to see is that enmeshed battlefield feeling between women and women, or between men and women and flipped over. It doesnt seem like its Harrow, does it? And then there are other people who get really into tagging them when they come up, and they just want to create an annotated edition. It is deep when you expect shallow, raucous when you expect dignity and, in the end, absolutely heartbreaking when you least expect it. I want to talk a little about Harrow and Ianthes relationship. And I think that thats a problem. And Ianthe will be awful. Theres a compelling argument to be made that the relationship between Harrow and Gideon is too toxic to root for or romanticize, and thats one of the major critiques Ive seen of the whole Locked Tomb trilogy. The way that the cavalier-necromancer relationship plays out between the Eighth House, with Silas and Colum, is totally different yet again to the way that it plays out in the Sixth House with Camilla and Palamedes. We accept credit card, Apple Pay, and The problem is that if you are chronically ill, if youre mentally ill, it is a hell of a lot harder. Gideons parentage is about to be revealed in a big way. Something went wrong. I love seeing pairs of people in a not necessarily romantic way. Its just Harrow making the name stupid. At the start of Gideon the Ninth, the Emperor invites the heirs of the Nine Houses and their sword-wielding bodyguards (called cavaliers[3]) to undergo a series of trials to become Lyctors. It is altogether its own thing. Canaan House is an island surrounded by water, and the space shuttles are dismantled shortly after everyone arrives: There is no escaping it. And we see that iterated over and over again in the different characters at Canaan House. Personally, they always make me chuckle, but I can also see feeling that they break the world-building a bit. They are opposing archetypes (sweet jock versus vicious goth bitch, or, if you will, Sweaterboy versus Absolute Nightmare), so of course they must despise each other. Support our mission, and make a gift today. One day, word comes down from the Undying Emperor (a big-G God in every important sense of the word) that each loyal house will send a necromancer and their "cavalier primary" (kind of a champion bodyguard and executive assistant) to a huge, decrepit and seriously old mansion full of ghosts and monsters, where they will face a series of tests to become the new lyctors to the Emperor. Where do you fall. The difference in personality between Gideon and Harrow is part of why this ship works so well for me, I think: Their voices compliment each other in such dynamic ways that I am compelled to root for them both emotionally and aesthetically. Shed just want the outfit, and she wouldnt even want the outfit, cuz like, the biceps. And I definitely wanted to do the Harrow is a cavalier and Gideon is necromancer. Although I was really worried that nobody would be able to tell that Gideon was the necromancer there. They make quick progress in the trial due to Harrow's exceptional skill in necromancy and Gideon's perceptiveness and combat skills. And Gideon would be the wrong-side-of-the-tracks bad boy who loves her and hates her in vastly unequal amounts. And its more about what character beats I wanted to hit, and about what plot beats I wanted to hit, that informed the mythology. WebGideon is forced to play cavalier for Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House, in a meeting that pits the houses against one another to see who can achieve the position of Lyctor and attain immortality. Ianthe will reach new heights of being absolutely goddamn dreadful. So that helped a lot. Gideon Nav, a foundling of mysterious antecedents, was not so much adopted as indentured by the Ninth House, a nearly extinct noble necromantic house. Because Lyctorhood, as all that gothic foreshadowing suggested, depends in the end on betraying the bond between necromancer and cavalier. But you know, whatever Harrow thinks of sex is really weird anyway. But Muir uses the claustrophobia and narrowed focus to fine purpose, concentrating the action around a series of increasingly torturous tests (which serve both to hook the plot along and give some baseline explanations for the entwined science, religion and necromantic magic on which her universe depends) and the relationships that develop between the limited cast of characters particularly Gideon and Harrow. Harrow the Ninth, an Amazon pick for Best SFF of 2020 and the New York Times and USA Today bestselling sequel to Gideon the Ninth, turns a galaxy inside out as one necromancer struggles to survive the wreckage of herself aboard the Emperor's haunted space station. The AU both soothes and hurts, and it intensifies your emotional engagement with canon. Harris said that Gideon is a "fiendishly talented fighter who is forced to use new and unfamiliar tools, and has to sacrifice some measure of subtlety in favor of crude effectiveness. It becomes apparent that each House's necromancer and cavalier must work together to complete the puzzles in the basement, so Harrow and Gideon begrudgingly ally. I wish I could say I was one of those authors who for five years before publication had this really thick journal where they were like, heres exactly what goes on. Being a lyctor is cool. So when Harrow finally remembers who Gideon is, she cant stop crying. Please enter a valid email and try again. We know by the end of Gideon that Harrow and Gideon have become the most important people in the world to one another, but they never make any explicitly romantic declarations of love. The group is tasked with exploring the mansion to discover the secrets of Lyctorhood. But the arc of their quest is designed to force them to work together anyway because Lyctorhood depends on the connection between necromancer and cavalier. I think its something that weve gotten to see in previous mythologies and previous books a lot with guys. And then in the last one with the coffeeshop AU, theres maybe the worst pun Ive ever done, but I dont even care. Something went wrong. In these surrounds, Gideon rewarded herself with a little plastic bag of porridge. The truth is that I am just a very referential writer. Also a fan of liminal spaces. Harrow was never going to be the type of character who was an intuitive magician, I think what classic D&D calls the difference between a wizard and sorcerer. I always feel really embarrassed when I get asked this question because I wish I had a more intelligent answer. Spoilers for Gideon the Ninth (but none for its sequel Harrow the Ninth) follow. And they finished the book, and theyre like, Cool, really interesting, really liked that sisterly relationship. And I was like, Oh, no, its gay. Her plans of fleeing to join the Emperor's armies (called the Cohort) are quickly foiled by her lifelong antagonist and heiress of the Ninth House, Harrowhark "Harrow" Nonagesimus. WebI have tried to dismantle you, Gideon Nav! (My fan theory: The seemingly random Harrow the Ninth epilogue is actually a flashback to a 21st century planet Earth, just before John blew everything up, and were going to spend at least a little time in the past a.k.a. In these surrounds, Gideon rewarded herself with a little plastic bag of porridge. Will you support Voxs explanatory journalism? WebEven if you don't see there as being romantic tension between Gideon and Harrow, Gideon at least is pretty clearly portrayed as a lesbian - aside from her taste in porn and 'Gideon the Ninth' is too funny to be horror, too gooey to be science fiction, has too many spaceships and autodoors to be fantasy, and has far more bloody dismemberings than your average parlor romance. In victory, her world has turned to ash. Harrow is haunted by the hundreds of innocent deaths involved in her creation. Id be like, This is so obvious. There are a couple of Gideon lines that were just too overt. The Sixth and the Ninth houses investigate one of the studies in Canaan House. So many have attempted it and so few have succeeded! So the easy laughter of the first volume fades away: The jokes are meaner in Harrow than they were in Gideon, and darker. Thats the toxic horror at the center of this trilogy. This trope is a classic of both thrillers and social comedies: Think Tom Ripley trying to pass himself off as a moneyed WASP in The Talented Mr. Ripley, or Drew Barrymore posing as a popular teen in Never Been Kissed. All of which is to say that I am absolutely here for the bag of tricks in this book, and perhaps most especially that long extended spree of fanfiction tropes we get as the script Harrow was running in her own brain to hide Gideons existence from herself starts to break down. I never stopped delighting in them, but I would guess a bunch of people found them tiresome. The Ninth sends Harrow, with Gideon (who has tried and failed to escape something like 600 times since being taken in) as her extremely reluctant cavalier. One of the things that makes Tamsyn Muirs fantasy novel Gideon the Ninth so deeply satisfying to read is the giddy joy it takes in playing with different genre tropes. Interestingly, its also uncertain in Gideon the Ninth whether the connection between Gideon and Harrow is romantic. Even if those depictions ended up making me sad. But I kept it in. If this were a cheesy 80's teen sex comedy (which, in some ways, it kinda is), Harrow would be the icy, blonde rich girl with the big house and perfect clothes. The Ninth House poisoned you, we trod you underfootI took you to this killing field as my slaveyou refuse to die, and you pity me! Harrow's family died by suicide upon discovering her heretical trespass; Harrow has been burdened with secretly leading the Ninth House for years. There is so much more of it in book three. Harrow tersely explains that shes festooned their living quarters with skulls for ambiance, and Gideon stalks around in black robes and skull face paint and sunglasses like an extremely committed D&D player, even though we know that she is just a sweet basic jock who loves pushups. Harrow is trapped in an endless trauma loop thanks to a whole bunch of events, stretching all the way back to being raised by two people who would kill hundreds of babies just to give her a leg up. "[6] In her review for Vox, Constance Grady commended Muir's ability to slide her "voice seamlessly from Lovecraftian gothic mode into a slangy contemporary mode without ever undercutting one or the other for cheap comedy. What a weird little grace note. Oddly enough, for as little as I understood anything going on in the mythos of Harrow which essentially tries to reimagine every heavy metal album cover as a redesign of a Lisa Frank original (Im going to find the right comparison point sooner or later) the world-building felt majestic to me. And similarly, the other Lyctors are all trapped in this weird trauma spiral with John, one that leaves them endlessly hoping they can break free from his hold over them, while knowing that it would take a desperate, last-second, last-ditch effort to accomplish that liberation. Theres biblical allusion that I havent even begun to mine. Its such a bad joke, and its so satisfying to understand especially coming the way that it does, nested among trauma spirals and threesomes with God and grief and dissociation and so, so many skeletons. Harrow reveals that the atmospheric contamination incident was an intentional human sacrifice by her family in order to create a necromancer powerful enough to save the Ninth House from economic and political failure: herself. Constance: Muir is definitely taking more risks in book two. My personal favorite is probably the scene where Augustine informs Harrow that if he wants Ortus the First to go, hell be giddy-gone. Harrow finds this to be a nonsensical statement, but once we understand that Harrows brain is overwriting Gideon the Firsts name as Ortus, it starts to make sense: Augustine is making a terrible pun on Gideons name. If Gideon had been named anything else, she would have also attempted to make that into an extremely banal, everyday name. And in her head, shes just like, God, I hate you so much. Its with that kind of energy that Gideon is able to slip beneath. Theres a hell of a lot of references to Greek mythology, to Homer, to The Iliad. Related: Which kind of necromancy is coolest? I think one problem is that I am kind of poking fun at myself as a writer. Im just so fascinated by the power dynamics, down to very little things, like the way the cavaliers are made to sleep in a smaller cot at the foot of the necromancers beds. It doesnt have anything in it of the mythology, which I hope is baroque, which comes later. The FBI and Energy Department think Covid-19 came from a lab. How the Great Recession paved the way for influencers to inherit the earth, The surprising lesson from a century of Oscar scandals. Done well, the Faking It trope engenders a sense of endearing vulnerability in the protagonist, who is always in danger of revealing their true self. Saying anything about Alecto would be so terrifically spoilery that I can barely think of what to say except everything is different, all over again. You know, I went into it knowing exactly which ones I wanted, and feeling like my editor was probably going to cut the coffeeshop AU. Shes getting down and dirty in the most appallingly necromantic way. Gideon the Ninth is a 2019 science fantasy novel by the New Zealand writer Tamsyn Muir. Google Pay. You're pretty much all-powerful. Chapter 37 (Skull header: Gideon 9th House skull with a mandible and aviators, and the IX crossed out) Okay, said Gideon. The collaboration is reflected in Gideon's journey retraining from a soldier's longsword to a duelist's rapier; Harris herself transitioned from fencing to the longsword. To my eye, this book suffers a bit from second-volume-itis: It has a lot of cleanup from volume one to take care of, and a lot of pieces to put into place for volume three, and it more or less pulls off both, but you can see the strain. In Rowe's interview with Muir, Muir said that the "irreverent tone" was intended "to balance out the horror aspect and some of the heavier, more Gormenghastian stylings.
